International Department
Homework The International Department at Schloss Neubeuern is one of the few establishments of its kind at a state-approved boarding school in Germany. It was founded in 1948 with the aim to integrate pupils of non-German mother tongue into the demanding curriculum of Bavaria. Since then, pupils from more than 40 nations have successfully finished our international programme. Our pedagogical priority is the provision of the linguistic competence and subject knowledge that international pupils require to successfully follow their school career at a Bavarian Gymnasium.

Programmes
The programmes of the International Department follow the requirements and performance profile of the Bavarian Gymnasium.. It is especially important to us, that our international pupils fully develop their intellectual potential quickly and confidently. For this reason, we offer the following programmes under the general heading “German for Guest Students”:

Intensive Courses for Guest Students with Entrance Examination
This intensive course combines teaching the respective subject vocabulary and essential grammatical structures, depending on prior knowledge, with step-by-step introduction to the specific learning requirements and objectives of the respective Year group. Especially German literature and history are taught. Furthermore, we offer our international pupils special courses in biology, mathematics and chemistry up until Year 10.

Since the linguistic proficiency of international pupils upon entering our Gymnasium is, as a rule, not sufficient to follow the general lessons, they are given GFL (German as a Foreign Language) lessons according to a timetable that meets their specific needs for the first three months. After three months, they are then successively introduced into the Year group, and are finally fully integrated and participating in all mandatory and elective subjects by the second semester. Parallel to this, these pupils are intensively prepared for the entrance examination. Intensive Courses for Guest Students without Entrance

Examination
We also offer international pupils attending our Gymnasium for only a short time (as part of an exchange program or during short stays of 4 months or more) a compact intensive course. Since these pupils are also members of their Year group, the German lessons they receive in the International Department are focused on the learning requirements of that Year group. In this course, as well, the primary objective is to familiarize international pupils with the learning content, learning methods and requirements of a Bavarian Gymnasium.

International Summer Course
In the last 3 weeks of the school year, Schloss Neubeuern offers an international summer course for students aged between 10 and 15 who are also interested in a long-term stay.  We will gladly provide you with more information on this “taster course“.

Explanation of Terms
1 Guest Pupil
A guest pupil is a pupil who changes into to the Bavarian school system after attending a school abroad, with the aim to finish with the Abitur (the university entrance qualification). This applies to international pupils and also to German pupils who have spent a long period of time abroad. They will be specially supported in the International Department until their entrance examination. In the first months, they only participate in the lessons of their Year group in the natural sciences and in English. Depending on their language proficiency, they also participate in tests. In accordance with education laws, however, their performance will not be marked and summarised by official school reports, but by perfomance overviews and detailed verbal evaluations. Guest pupil status ends upon passing the entrance examination.

2 Entrance
Examination International pupils who are accepted into the Bavarian Gymnasium and who want to finish their school career in Bavaria must undergo an entrance examination at Schloss Neubeuern. This entrance examination is usually taken at the end of the school year. In principle, there is also the possibility to take this test at mid-term. The entrance examination is taken as a written and an oral test. Written tests are done in the core subjects. The minor subjects are generally tested orally. An entrance examination not passed for a certain Year can, with a suitable result, be evaluated as a passed entrance examination for a lower Year.

3 School Probationary Period
Once the entrance examination is passed, the guest status ends. There follows a school probationary period up until the end of the semester or until the end of the school year, after which the regular German school career begins. Within this period, the international pupils are marked normally. The final acceptance, which is confirmed upon handing out the semester reports, depends on the passing of the school probationary period . During the probationary period, it is determined whether the pupil has caught up with the requirements of his Year, based on his performance in all subjects. If the pupil does not pass the probationary period, he/she can be sent back to the previous Year.

4  Changing the Sequence of Foreign Languages
For international pupils entering Years 7, 8, 9 or 10, the Bavarian Ministry of Education allows for changes in the sequence of foreign languages specified in the curriculum if this sequence of languages would lead to undue hardship.  In these cases, the international pupil can then use his/her mother tongue as a second foreign language. Foreign languages for which such approval is granted and which are not taught at the school must be concluded at the end of Year 10. The change of the sequence of languages is applied for by the International Department.

5 Host Families
Although our international pupils live in the boarding school, there is still a need for alternative accommodation on some exeat weekends and during short holidays. In most cases, this matter sorts itself out, in that friends and classmates take their fellow pupils home with them. In addition to this, we have been developing a particularly agreeable collaboration between Schloss Neubeuern and several families in and around Neubeuern for many years now. These families, whose children generally attended or are still attending our school accept international pupils especially for the short holidays, for a small remuneration. Staying with a host family is not only the best opportunity for intensive language practice outside the school, it also introduces the pupils to the everyday life of a German family and the German culture as a whole. We strongly recommend these host family stays.

6. Administrative Support
In the case of visa or arrival formalities, the school offers international pupils quick and efficient support. As soon as the international pupils arrive at Schloss Neubeuern, all other formalities (extension of visa, health insurance etc.) are handled from here.
